CACHALOTE ITINERARY - 8 DAY CRUISE
Wednesday:
am: Baltra airport
pm: Plazas:
This island is full of life. There are colonies of sea lions and land iguanas. On the steep banks it is possible to see a great number of birds such as nesting tropic birds and fork-tailed seagulls, but most of all, enjoying the beautiful view from atop the steep banks or strolling along the base of the cliff is an extremely pleasurable experience. The Opuntia cacti grow here too and the vegetation changes color according to the season of the year.
Thursday:
am: Charles Darwin Research Station
Is located in the town of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. A ten minute walk from the Center of town.
At The Charles Darwin Research Station you'll learn first hand of the conservation and research efforts in the Galapagos islands. See the tortoise hatchlings and breeding programs which are saving several races of tortoises from extinction. Tour the Van Straelen Exhibit Hall. For most, this will be your only opportunity to see the giant Galapagos tortoises.
The Charles Darwin Research Station conducts and facilitates research in the Galapagos Islands and the Galapagos Marine Resources Reserve of Ecuador.
The Darwin Station is part of the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands, an international non-profit organization dedicated to scientific research in the Galapagos Islands since 1959.

The Darwin Station provides:
  • Information and technical assistance for the Galapagos National Park Service and other branches of the government of Ecuador.
  • Support for resident and visiting scientists who work in Galapagos.
  • Environmental education for island communities and schools and for the visitors that come to Galapagos each year.
  • Hands-on training in science, education, and conservation for Ecuadorian university students who participate in the Darwin Station's volunteer and scholarship programs.
pm: The Highlands
Offer the lush humid zone with its vegetation of Miconia bushed, Scalesia and inactive volcanic comes. Santa Cruz has more endemic plants than any other island in the Galapagos. The Galapagos tortoises can be seen in their natural habitat here.
Friday:
am: Punta Suarez
Offers the visitor quite a display of wildlife: Marine Iguanas with copper red patches, Swallow Tailed Gulls, the endemic Long Billed Mocking bird, Finches, Masked and Blue Footed Boobies, Oystercatchers, Sea Lions and Lava Lizards. This is the only island where the Waved Albatross is to be seen during the breeding season,
April to December.
pm: Gardner Bay
Located on the north eastern coast is an excellent swimming and snorkelling site.
Saturday:
am: Point Cormorant
We visit a Flamingo Lagoon where other species of shore birds may also be seen. Snorkelling at Devil´s Crown, a submerged volcanic cone.
pm: Post office Bay
One may leave letters like whalers did in the 18th century in a wooden barrel mailbox.
Sunday:
am: Elizabeth Bay
Here you will observe Flightless Cormorants, Brown Pelicans, Rays, Marine Turtles, Sea lions and Lava Herons. Also there is a large area of giant red Mangroves
pm: Punta Moreno

pm: Bartolome
Nowhere else is the geological history of the Islands better portrayed than here. The most impressive volcanic scenery.

Wednesday:
am: Black Turtle Cove
It is a red mangrove lagoon on Santa Cruz , is a nursery for many sharks and rays. It is also a great location to observe mating sea turtles, after all the site takes its name for the black sea turtles that mate in these calm waters.
There are large groups of resting white-tip reef sharks, schools of golden rays and spotted eagle rays, and a few juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks and black-tip sharks. The water is nearly mirror-calm, and you often use paddles instead of the loud panga engines to move around the area.
