Ecuador Overland
Quito
- Ecuador's capital is a bubbling and noisy city, embedded
in an Andean valley. Stay at least a few days in this magnificent
city and marvel at it's impressive colonial old town with
an abundance of churches, monasteries, museums and charming
little restaurants. While in Quito, take the chance and visit
the nearby Middle of the World where you have the unique possibility
to stand on both hemispheres at the same time. Take a look
at impressive volcanic craters nearby Quito, or climb the
Cotopaxi volcano. Check out our
Quito hotels section to choose the
optimal place for your stay!
Cuenca
- All those who are fond of colonial architecture,
but prefer to stay in a less noisy and turbulent city than
Quito, should consider a trip to Cuenca. Also have a look
at the nearby Inca ruins of Ingapirca which can be easily
visited during a day-trip. Cuenca is also a treasure trove
for the famous panama hats (which are, despite their name,
made in Ecuador). Nature-lovers will enjoy hiking and camping
at Cajas national park.
Otavalo
- Situated in the Northern Highlands, this normally peaceful
village in the Andes is widely known for its lively Saturday
market that has been visited by travelers all over the world.
Apart from the market, Otavalo is also impressive because
of its captivating landscape of lagoons, lakes and valleys
that can be admired during a hiking- or a riding trip. Don't
miss the breathtakingly beautiful view over Otavalo and San
Pablo lake from the hillsides, a patchwork quilt in all shades
of green you can imagine.
Baños
- This small, touristy village is equally liked by lazybones,
as well as adventure freaks. Chill out in the hot baths of
Baños and allow yourself a nice massage, or go for
mountain biking, river rafting, hiking, or horseback riding.
This place has it all.
