The waters between Manabí’s coast and Isla de la Plata are a prime mating ground for Humpback whales, attracting these majestic creatures from the cold polar regions to Ecuador’s tropical shores every year between June and November.
On June 23, 2025, tourists and scientists alike were treated to an extraordinary surprise: a rare albino Humpback whale was spotted breaching near Isla de la Plata, delivering an unforgettable show. These white whales are incredibly rare, with experts estimating that only two are known worldwide.
After reviewing footage of the sighting, it was confirmed that the whale was “Suru,” a male born in 2022 off the coast of Costa Rica. His appearance in Ecuadorian waters is a spectacular reminder of the country’s rich biodiversity and the unique wildlife experiences it offers.
