Most Memorable Galapagos Encounters

Choosing a single favorite moment from a good movie is hard, and choosing just one animal encounter on a Galapagos journey is even harder. The Galapagos Islands are a destination that leaves you in awe from the moment you step off the plane. Arriving at Baltra or San Cristobal airports feels surreal, and with a bit of luck, a land iguana may be waiting at the exit to welcome you or gently remind you that this is their home.

While every island and every itinerary offers unforgettable encounters, here are some of our absolute favorites:

Sea Lions
The stars of any Galapagos trip. Their playful nature and dog-like personalities will have you taking photos nonstop, both on land and in the water. You might even find them stretched out on a park bench in town, enjoying a well-deserved nap. After all, it cannot be easy being adorable all the time.

Penguins
Yes, Galapagos has its own penguin species and it’s as charming as the islands themselves. Small and fast, usually are easier to see on the west side of the archipelago, although some colonies are known to live around Santiago Island. They are incredible fast swimmers and definitely a highlight of a Galapagos snorkeling session.

Tortoises
A true example of evolutionary wonder, the islands are home to more than a dozen subspecies of giant tortoises. Seeing them roaming freely in their natural habitat is reason enough to call your trip a success. At breeding centers, you can also learn about conservation efforts and observe them at every stage of life, including baby giant tortoises.

Rays, Sharks, and more
The Galapagos archipelago is magical both on land and beneath the surface. Many visitors agree that the islands are best experienced underwater. Countless shark species, eagle and manta rays, sea turtles, marine iguanas, and vibrant fish welcome you into an extraordinary world of marine encounters while snorkeling or diving.

The best part? Wildlife excursions, both on land and in the water, are the highlight of any tour, whether land-based or by cruise. Galapagos will show you that, by the end of each day, you will have learned something new and run out of ways to say, “Did you see that?”
